A 23-year-old software engineer in Pune, Vaishnavi Pravin Jarande, died by suicide at her marital home just months after her wedding, prompting a police investigation into alleged dowry harassment and abetment of suicide.
Vaishnavi married Omkar Sanjay Ghisare on May 9. According to a formal complaint lodged by her father, the bride’s family spent approximately ₹45 lakh on the wedding festivities and provided 10 tolas of gold. However, the victim’s parents allege that shortly after the marriage, her husband and in-laws began subjecting her to persistent physical and mental abuse, demanding an additional ₹5 lakh to purchase a car.
After a brief work stint in Bengaluru, Vaishnavi had returned to Pune at the end of June to continue working for an IT firm while residing at her matrimonial home. The situation escalated on the night of September 24, when Vaishnavi called her mother to report ongoing harassment at the hands of her husband, mother-in-law, and father-in-law. Later that evening around 11:30 PM, her husband also called her parents.
