The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested two Military Engineering Services (MES) officers from Pune on Thursday for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe.In an official statement released on Friday, the CBI identified the arrested officers as an Assistant Garrison Engineer and a Junior Engineer from MES, Khadki, Pune.
They were accused of demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹2 lakh from the complainant.The complainant, who holds power of attorney for a private company executing MES contracts, filed a complaint alleging that the officers initially demanded ₹6 lakh as undue advantage.
According to the press release, “Despite completion of works and submission of completion certificates, payments were withheld to coerce the complainant into paying the bribe. Following negotiations, the accused officials agreed to accept ₹2 lakh as the first installment.”
A CBI team conducted a trap on Thursday, catching the Junior Engineer red-handed while accepting ₹2 lakh. The bribe amount was recovered from his office.The Assistant Garrison Engineer was also arrested for his involvement in the conspiracy.Further searches at the accused officers’ residences and offices led to the recovery of documents and unexplained cash totaling ₹1,88,500.The CBI continues to investigate the matter.
