Design Flaw Haunts Nagpur’s Sadar Flyover, Threatening to Worsen Traffic Chaos

A major design flaw in Nagpur’s Sadar flyover project has reignited concerns over the city’s traffic woes, with experts warning that the latest redesign might exacerbate congestion instead of alleviating it. Originally intended to ease the load on one of Nagpur’s busiest routes, the flyover had previously caused the closure of a national highway section due to flawed planning.
In response to the backlash, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari reportedly instructed officials to revise the design and submit a corrected plan. However, the new proposal has drawn fresh criticism, particularly over the flyover’s landing near RBI Chowk, which experts fear could choke traffic between RBI Square and the already congested Old Morris College junction. The revised plan suggests the flyover will begin near Liberty Talkies and descend after crossing RBI Chowk.
While officials argue this will ease congestion near Kasturchand Park and surrounding intersections, traffic analysts contend that concentrating vehicles at this landing point will funnel thousands more into an already overcrowded corridor.
Since its inception in 2020, the project has been mired in controversy, highlighting deeper issues in Nagpur’s urban planning. The ongoing challenges raise pressing questions about how a traffic solution could inadvertently create a new bottleneck in the city’s core.
