The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the licenses of 16 prominent food establishments across the Pune division following a rigorous four-day inspection drive. Conducted between August 11 and August 14 under the state’s “Safe Food, Safe Drug, Safe Maharashtra” campaign, the special operation targeted widespread hygiene failures and persistent violations of standard food safety regulations.
According to D V Bhogawade, FDA Joint Commissioner for the Pune division, the crackdown followed severe non-compliance with statutory safety provisions. High-profile venues facing suspension include Burger King on East Street in Pune, Hotel Sayaji (Fortune Enterprises) in Lonavala, and several popular regional eateries such as Hotel Chul Mutton, Simply South in Bhosari, and Hotel Pawan in Kolhapur. Major chain outlets including Domino’s Pizza and Pizza Hut in Satara were also penalized, along with corporate facilities like the JBM Hospitality canteen at HDFC Bank in Wanwadi.
The enforcement drive extended beyond traditional brick-and-mortar restaurants to cover dark stores and quick-commerce delivery hubs. Suspension orders were served to multiple e-commerce facilities, including Zepto in Lohegaon, Swinsta ENT in Karvenagar, and Blinkit (Blink Commerce) hubs on Sinhagad Road and at the Timber Market in Bhavani Peth. Regional dairy operations were similarly targeted, with enforcement actions taken against Om Sai Ram Milk and Milk Products in Khed and Dhamnath Doodh Shitikaran Kendra in Ambegaon.
Building on these compliance efforts, the FDA announced a follow-up enforcement initiative aimed at protecting student health. Beginning Monday, authorities will strictly monitor food vendors operating near educational institutions, targeting the sale of high-fat, high-sugar, and high-salt (HFSS) products. FDA officials explicitly warned that selling HFSS items within a 50-meter radius of school premises will trigger immediate legal action against non-compliant businesses.
