The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for Pune, Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, warning citizens of persistent thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate to heavy rainfall.
While overnight downpours caused routine waterlogging and localized train delays in Mumbai, similar heavy showers lashed Pune district. The widespread rain has broken a prolonged dry spell, offering immense relief from weeks of scorching heat but bringing typical urban transit challenges along with it.
The impact of the heavy rain was sharply felt across Pune’s rural pockets. In Rajgad taluka, the crucial Shivganga River bridge along the Nasrapur-Rajgad route was completely submerged after an intense overnight spell.
Relief for Pune City, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and Local Farmers
Pune city spent most of the day under heavy overcast skies with intermittent spells that intensified into the night. The IMD expects this pattern to hold over the next four days, with local temperatures hovering comfortably between 22°C and 30°C.
In the twin city of Pimpri-Chinchwad, moderate Tuesday evening showers successfully cooled down the area, though it triggered immediate traffic snarls at busy junctions. Commuters experienced heavy bottlenecks on the service road running along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway near Nigdi.
Meanwhile, the agrarian community has welcomed the downpour with open arms. The timely moisture has breathed life back into struggling paddy nurseries, setting an optimistic tone for the region’s primary rice cultivation and sowing cycle.
Catchment Levels Remain a Concern
Dam Levels Notice: Despite the visible intensity of the recent showers, official data reveals that rainfall over Pune’s major reservoir catchments remains heavily below normal. The combined dam systems of Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon, Temghar, Pavana, and Mulshi have recorded roughly 95.84% less rainfall compared to the exact same period last year. Irrigation officials are heavily banking on the sustained monsoon forecast to replenish these critical water reserves.
