India’s Longest Flyover of 31 km to be Built on Pune-Ahmednagar National Highway

In a major move to ease traffic congestion in Pune, the Centre has announced plans to construct India’s longest flyover spanning 31 kilometers on the Pune-Ahmednagar national highway. The ambitious project is part of a broader Rs 45,000 crore road development initiative aimed at making Pune free from traffic jams and pollution.Union Road Transport & Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari shared details during his visit to Pune, stating, “I had assured the state government that the Centre would address traffic issues on Pune’s highways.
I requested the state to exempt GST, bear the cost of land acquisition, and waive royalty on construction materials. I also urged the state to complete planning so we can lay the foundation stone for four key road projects.”Following a review of highway projects in Pune, Gadkari revealed that three out of the four projects will be developed by the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC) in collaboration with the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).The flyover project will cover the stretch from Pune to Shirur, featuring a 53.4-km elevated road costing Rs 7,514 crore initially.
This will later be expanded into a 192-km greenfield expressway corridor extending from Shirur to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, with an estimated cost of Rs 14,886 crore. Highlighting the scale of the project, Gadkari explained, “A 31-km segment of the 53-km elevated road from Pune to Shirur will be the longest flyover in India, featuring six lanes. The flyover will start at Kharadi junction and end near Ranjangaon MIDC.
It will include three sections: a 7.4-km flyover from Kharadi to Vithalwadi with a four-lane road underneath, a flyover for vehicles at level one, and a Metro line at level two.”This development is expected to reduce travel time drastically from one and a half hours to just 45 minutes, significantly improving connectivity and reducing pollution in the region.
