A joyful trip to Lonavala ended in heartbreak for students of Symbiosis International University’s BBA program, as two students lost their lives and two others were injured in a road accident on the Mumbai-Bengaluru highway early Thursday morning, police reported.The students were returning from the hill station in a Maruti Swift when, around 5:45 am near Eidgah Maidan, Dehu Road in Pune, their car allegedly collided with a container truck.
The deceased have been identified as Divyaraj Singh Rathod, 23, from Rajasthan, and Siddhant Anand Shekhar, 22, from Jharkhand. Their companions, Nihal Tamboli (20) and Harshavardhan Mishra (22), sustained injuries in the crash.Following the accident, teams from the Dehu Road police station, highway safety patrol, and fire brigade swiftly arrived at the scene. The injured were rushed to a private hospital, where Rathod and Shekhar were declared dead.
Their bodies were sent for post-mortem examination, while Tamboli and Mishra continue to receive medical treatment and are reported to be stable.The Dehu Road police have registered an FIR and taken the truck driver, Manish Kumar Manipal, 39, into custody on charges of negligent driving.Inspector Vikram Bansode of Dehu Road police shared details: “The car was driven by Nihal Tamboli. The accident happened when the truck ahead slowed down unexpectedly, causing the car to crash into it.”
He added, “Further investigation is underway, and thankfully, the injured students are now stable.”This tragic incident has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a memorable getaway for the students, highlighting the need for road safety vigilance on busy highways.
