MSRTC Terminates Sleeper Bus Services Between Nagpur and Pune, Sparking Outcry

In a controversial decision that has faced significant backlash, particularly from student communities, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has announced the termination of its only sleeper bus services between Nagpur and Pune, effective June 2.Originally launched with great enthusiasm during Diwali two years ago, the two 30-seater non-AC sleeper buses quickly became a popular travel option for passengers seeking an affordable, safe, and convenient way to journey between the two cities.
Departing daily from Ganeshpeth Bus Stand at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., the buses would arrive in Pune the following morning, while return services ensured timely arrivals back in Nagpur by mid-morning.The sleeper services were especially favored among economically disadvantaged female students, who benefitted from a 50% concession, bringing the fare down from ₹1,800 to ₹900.Despite the popularity and utility of these services, MSRTC cited financial losses as the reason for discontinuation. “Both buses were running at a deficit,” confirmed Deputy General Manager Shrikant Gabhne, who added that the vehicles would be reassigned to Western Maharashtra and replaced on the route with traditional two-by-two seating buses.
The decision has left many regular commuters disheartened. Shubhangi Sonkusre, a student who frequently relied on the service, expressed her disappointment: “The timing and fare were perfect for students like me. These buses made education in Pune accessible and affordable.”With online reservations disabled from June 2, the discontinuation of these sleeper services signifies more than just the end of a route; it represents a significant setback for many students and low-income travelers who relied on this cost-effective lifeline to pursue education and opportunities in Pune. As the community grapples with this change, the call for alternative solutions continues to grow.
