In a major push to elevate public health and food safety standards, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has announced a mandatory grading and certification system for all hotels and restaurants across the city.
Introduced as a flagship policy in the NMC Budget 2026–27, the initiative aims to overhaul urban sanitation and hold food establishments accountable to strict compliance standards.
How the Grading System Works
Under the new policy, city eateries will undergo routine, rigorous inspections by civic officials. Establishments will be evaluated on several key operational and hygiene parameters:
Hygiene & Safety: Cleanliness of premises, safe water supply, proper maintenance of sewage inspection chambers, and strict compliance with food safety regulations.
Civic Compliance: Timely payment of property taxes, valid tax registrations, and the availability of adequate customer parking.
Consumer Rights: Fair billing practices and adherence to consumer health standards.
Mandatory Public Display: Once inspected, every hotel and restaurant must prominently display its official NMC grade and certification at its entrance. This allows customers to verify hygiene and service quality before stepping inside.
Curbing Adulteration and Boosting Tourism
The NMC intends for this policy to serve multiple purposes. Beyond driving tax compliance and penalizing defaulters, the system is designed to crack down on small eateries and restaurants using adulterated ingredients.
By making hygiene ratings completely transparent, the civic body aims to empower consumers to make safer dining choices while transforming Nagpur into a cleaner, more tourist-friendly destination.
Implementation Timeline
While an NMC official acknowledged that the city-wide rollout will take some time to be fully executed, the civic body emphasizes that the policy will deliver massive long-term health and commercial benefits to both consumers and compliant businesses.
