Nagpur Hits Record 44°C as Severe Heatwave Grips Vidarbha

Vidarbha’s unrelenting summer reached a new peak on Friday, as an intensifying heatwave pushed temperatures above 43°C across nearly all districts. Nagpur bore the brunt of the surge, recording a scorching 44.0°C, the city’s highest temperature of the 2026 season so far. The extreme heat forced many residents to retreat indoors, leaving the city’s usually bustling streets noticeably quieter during the peak afternoon hours.

Regional Hotspots

While Nagpur sizzled, it wasn’t the only district facing dangerous conditions. Wardha emerged as the hottest location in the region, clocking in at 44.4°C, followed closely by Akola at 44.1°C. Gadchiroli matched Nagpur’s mark at 44°C, underscoring a regional trend of severe heat stress that has placed several Vidarbha districts among the hottest locations globally this week.

Health and Safety Concerns

The persistent rise in daytime temperatures has raised significant public health concerns. In urban centers like Nagpur, the “heat island” effect has made exposure during the afternoon particularly hazardous. Meteorological data shows that temperatures across the region are currently 2°C to 4°C above the seasonal normal, with little relief expected at night as minimum temperatures also remain elevated.

IMD Warnings and Precautions

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert, warning that these heatwave conditions are likely to persist, with some areas potentially crossing the 45°C mark over the weekend. Authorities have urged citizens to:

  • Avoid direct sunlight between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking water and electrolyte-rich fluids frequently.
  • Wear protective gear, such as hats, sunglasses, and light cotton clothing, if outdoor activity is unavoidable.

With no immediate rainfall in the forecast, the region remains on high alert as it navigates the harshest phase of the summer season. Stay tuned to know more about it and others only with us and if you have anything to share do comment below and share your thoughts.
