Nagpur Municipal Corporation Intensifies Anti-Encroachment Drive Across Three Zones

In a decisive move to reclaim public spaces and enhance urban mobility, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) Enforcement Wing launched a wide-scale anti-encroachment operation on April 13, 2026. The drive targeted three major zones across the city, focusing on clearing footpaths and removing illegal structures that have long hindered pedestrian safety and smooth traffic flow.

Zonal Operations and Crackdowns

The enforcement teams, equipped with heavy machinery and support staff, carried out synchronized actions in the following areas:

  • Dharampeth (Zone No. 02): Officials cleared a significant stretch from the Zonal Office to the bustling Sitabuldi Main Road and Variety Square. Illegal stalls and shops that had spilled onto the roads were dismantled to restore the original width of the thoroughfare.
  • Laxmi Nagar (Zone No. 01): The drive intensified at the Khamla Mutton Market, where teams demolished 8 to 10 unauthorized sheds. Additionally, various illegal vending materials and temporary structures blocking adjacent roads were seized.
  • Gandhibagh (Zone No. 06): Action was concentrated around Badkas Chowk, Mahal Chowk, and the Gadkari Wada These high-traffic heritage and commercial pockets were cleared of permanent and temporary encroachments to ease the daily commute for residents.

Leadership and Enforcement

The operation was executed under the direct supervision of Deputy Commissioner (Enforcement) Mangesh Khawale, with the on-ground support of Assistant Commissioners Sanjay Kamble and Dhananjay Jadhav. Beyond mere removal, the NMC seized several vending carts and commercial materials to prevent immediate re-encroachment.

This initiative is part of a broader city-wide strategy to prioritize the rights of pedestrians over illegal commercial occupancy. NMC officials have warned that such drives will continue periodically to ensure that Nagpur’s major intersections and markets remain accessible and safe for the general public.
