The Nagpur City Traffic Police has intensified its crackdown on parents and vehicle owners who allow underage individuals to drive motor vehicles. In 2026, local courts convicted 26 individuals in separate minor driving cases, imposing a steep penalty of ₹30,000 in each instance.
The legal action stems from key provisions under the Motor Vehicles Act. Courts levied a ₹25,000 fine per case under Section 199A, which specifically targets the guardians or vehicle owners who facilitate the offense. Additionally, courts invoked Section 199(4) to order the cancellation or disqualification of the associated driving licenses for a period of 12 months.
Traffic police officials emphasized that enforcement drives focus heavily on adult accountability rather than holding minors solely responsible. Officials noted that providing keys to underage children constitutes serious negligence that directly endangers public safety and carries severe legal ramifications.
To enforce compliance, the Traffic Department has deployed special units across high-density corridors, key intersections, and routes frequently traveled by school and college students. Officers are actively monitoring traffic for minors operating motorcycles, scooters, and cars.
The initiative aims to deter underage driving and curb preventable road accidents. Police leadership has appealed to parents, citizens, and educational institutions to actively cooperate with law enforcement by ensuring minors do not access vehicles.
