Pune Records First Suspected Dengue Death Following Nine-Year-Old Girl’s Passing

Pune has registered its first suspected dengue-related fatality of the year after a nine-year-old girl from Lohegaon’s Khese Park passed away during treatment at Ruby Hall Clinic on Sunday, October 18. The Class 4 student tested positive for dengue via a non-ELISA NS1 antigen test. However, because the case requires a formal review by the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) health audit committee, the death is currently classified as suspected rather than officially confirmed.

Timeline and Clinical Deterioration

According to available reports, the child developed a fever after attending a dandiya event on the evening of October 17. Her family initially consulted a private hospital near their residence for outpatient care. When her health rapidly deteriorated, she was admitted to Ruby Hall Clinic later that same day.

Despite medical intervention, the young patient passed away within 48 hours of admission. Attending doctors noted that she was critically ill, suffering from severe complications that impacted both her liver and kidneys. Her blood work showed a drastic drop in platelets. In the initial stage the Platelet count stood at approximately 2 lakh, while the count  has dropped sharply to 50,000 upon arrival at Ruby Hall Clinic and lastly there is a decline in the number of cases. Platelets plummeted further to 9,000 as her condition worsened.

Municipal Health Audit and Preventive Measures

The civic health audit committee will systematically review all medical records, case files, and diagnostic test results to officially determine the cause of death.

In response to the tragedy, the Pune Municipal Corporation has launched intensive vector-control and preventive operations in Khese Park and surrounding neighborhoods. These containment drives are designed to eliminate mosquito-breeding sites and curb the transmission of vector-borne infections across the area.
