In a disturbing incident on the night of July 26, a mob of 60-70 people stormed the house of a Kargil War veteran’s relative in Chandan Nagar, Pune. According to family member Shamshad Sheikh, who runs a truck transport business, the group accused them of being Bangladeshis and demanded identity documents. The mob also threatened the family during the intrusion.
Despite policemen being present in plain clothes at the scene, Sheikh said the harassment was not stopped. The family was subsequently taken to the police station late at night. At the police station, Inspector Seema Dhakne allegedly told the family to return the next morning or risk being declared Bangladeshis. Multiple attempts to contact Inspector Dhakne for comment were unsuccessful.Sheikh’s uncle, Irshad Ahmad, who also lives in the house, highlighted the family’s long military history. “Our family has served in the Indian Army for 130 years.
Our great-grandfather retired as a hawaldar, our grandfather was a subedar, and his brother was Jamshed Khan, a former DGP of Madhya Pradesh. Two of my uncles were subedar majors; Naimullah Khan fought in the 1965 and 1971 wars, Md Salim fought in the 1971 war, and my brother Hakimuddin served with the Bombay Sappers, participated in the Kargil War, and retired in 2000.
