Sugar Prices Dip in Pune Wholesale Market Following Import Announcement

Wholesale sugar prices in Pune recorded a drop on Tuesday, falling from ₹67 per kg to ₹61 per kg, according to the Pune Sugar Merchants Association. The price correction follows the Central Government’s decision to import 10 lakh tonnes of sugar to stabilize domestic supply ahead of the upcoming festive season.

Market Breakdown & Pricing

The Wholesale Rates seems to have Dropped in Pune and it has been reported by ₹6 per kg within 24 hours, down to ₹61 per kg.

While the Retail Rates too have gone down slightly by ₹5 per kg, currently retailing at approximately ₹70 per kg.

Lastly, talking about the Consumer Impact, it seems interesting. Despite the dip, retail buyers note that current prices remain high for household budgets ahead of peak festival demand.

Traders Address Hoarding Allegations & Consumption Dynamics

Ishwar Nahar, president of the Pune Sugar Merchants Association, dismissed claims of trader hoarding, calling the practice financially unviable.

“Traders cannot afford to hoard sugar. The money generated by selling sugar to retailers is used to purchase fresh stocks from sugar mills. With the festive season approaching, no trader can afford to block their money by hoarding,” Nahar stated.

He further clarified that retail consumers account for only 35% of national sugar consumption. Bulk commercial buyers—such as pharmaceutical firms, beverage brands, and sweet manufacturers—consume the remaining 65%.

Dispute Over Base Pricing

While retail shopkeepers in areas like Bopodi confirm a slight drop in shelf prices, local wholesalers attribute the earlier price spike to rate hikes by sugar mills, claiming mill bidding prices rose by ₹6–7 per kg from the standard ₹46–47 base. However, Pratap Ohal, vice-president of the Maharashtra State Cooperative Sugar Factories Federation, denied that cooperative mills increased their selling rates.
