System Failure: 20-Year-Old NEET Aspirant Dies by Suicide in Nagpur Amid Re-Exam Stress

The family of a 20-year-old National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) aspirant, who died by suicide in Nagpur, has blamed her death on the recent paper leak controversy. They state that the government’s subsequent decision to hold a re-examination pushed her to take the extreme step.

The student had been living in Nagpur, where her father works as a cook. The tragedy came to light after the family returned to their native village in the Mauganj district of Madhya Pradesh to perform her last rites.

The Suicide Note: Fear of the Re-Exam

While packing her belongings, the family discovered a suicide note hidden inside one of her textbooks. Relatives revealed that the young student had fallen into a deep depression after learning that the original test was cancelled, a change in her mental health they did not recognize in time.

Excerpts from the note: “I had high hopes of scoring good marks in the NEET exam, but now there is no guarantee that I will perform just as well if I have to take the paper again. I’m sorry, Mom and Dad. I’ve ruined everything.”

Family Left in Debt and Disillusioned

The victim’s father expressed immense grief and anger at the educational system, noting that the family had sacrificed everything to fund her medical school dreams.

Financial Sacrifice: Despite surviving on a limited income, the family had taken out loans worth lakhs of rupees to pay for her coaching and education.
A Shattered Dream: Her father stated that she was happy and highly confident of her selection right after the initial exam. The news of the paper leak completely broke her spirit.
Losing Faith in Education: Devastated by the loss, the father stated that he would rather put his younger son—currently in Class 9—into farming than subject him to the trauma of a broken examination system.

Political Reactions and Financial Aid

Following the tragedy, Congress Youth President Yash Ghanghoria visited the grieving family in their native village. He offered his condolences and officially promised political and financial support to help the family manage the massive education-related debt left behind. He stated that the young girl was a victim of a complete system failure.
