A 34-year-old woman and her six-year-old son died after allegedly jumping from the 18th floor of a residential building in Pune district on Friday evening. The incident occurred around 6:30 PM at a housing society in the Dange Chowk area, under the jurisdiction of the Wakad police station.
According to police officials, the family, originally hailing from Rajasthan, had been residing on the seventh floor of the complex for the past two years, where the woman’s husband works as an IT professional. CCTV footage retrieved from the premises captured the mother and child taking the elevator to the 18th floor. The video showed the woman removing her footwear shortly before both were found in the building’s duct area.
Investigating officers subsequently recovered an eight-page handwritten note from the family’s apartment. Preliminary inquiries revealed that the woman had been suffering from a chronic spinal condition for several years.
The recovered note detailed her emotional distress and concern regarding her husband’s future, explicitly urging him to remarry and rebuild his life following her death. She also expressed deep anxieties over how her young son would cope in her absence, explaining that her decision to take the child stemmed from fears that he would grieve her loss and that single fatherhood might hinder her husband’s prospects of remarrying.
Police dispatched a forensic team to examine the scene and gather physical evidence. The bodies of the deceased were transferred to Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital for post-mortem examination, and their extended family members have been notified.
Senior Inspector Vitthal Salunkhe of the Wakad police station confirmed that an accidental death report has been lodged. Authorities are currently examining the notebook, electronic devices, and medical history to verify the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
