Fuel Cost Rise: MNGL Hikes CNG Price by ₹1 Per Kg in Pune; Domestic PNG Rates Revised

Pune: Commuters and households in Pune and its neighboring regions will face a slight increase in their monthly fuel expenses as Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL) announced a price hike for both Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Piped Natural Gas (PNG), effective from the midnight of June 15–16, 2026.

The retail selling price of CNG has been increased by ₹1 per kilogram, bringing the new domestic rate to ₹95.75 per kg. This revised tariff directly impacts motorists across Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Chakan, Talegaon, and Hinjawadi.

According to MNGL, the price revision was unavoidable due to a sharp rise in the procurement and input costs of natural gas.

Fuel Economics: CNG vs. Traditional Fuels

Despite the marginal hike, MNGL maintained that natural gas remains a highly economical and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fossil fuels. The company highlighted that motorists transitioning to or using CNG can still look forward to substantial savings:

  • Compared to Petrol: Drivers can save approximately 47% on fuel costs.

  • Compared to Diesel: Drivers can save nearly 25% on operational expenses.

Auto-rickshaw operators, in particular, are expected to retain a competitive edge with lower overall running costs compared to their diesel-powered counterparts.

Domestic PNG Tariffs Adjusted

In tandem with the CNG hike, MNGL also rolled out a marginal increase in the prices of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) supplied to households. The company stated that this adjustment is part of a broader fiscal strategy to offset escalating input costs and guarantee an uninterrupted, safe gas supply to domestic kitchens.

Consumers have been advised to take note of the newly updated tariffs across both segments as they plan their monthly transport and household budgets.
