Nagpur is likely to come under water rationing in the coming days as major reservoirs supplying drinking water to the city have witnessed a sharp decline in storage levels. The falling water reserves have raised serious concerns within the civic administration regarding their ability to meet the municipality’s requirements through the summer months. Consequently, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is evaluating the current supply parameters before deciding whether to enforce formal restrictions on daily distribution.
Mayor Neeta Thakre clarified that residents are currently receiving water according to their regular schedule, with no municipal cuts implemented thus far. However, she indicated that the administration may soon have to scale back daily distribution if storage figures fail to stabilize. A high-level review meeting with Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule is scheduled for Saturday to assess total available water stock and establish an action plan. A formal decision regarding timed supply cuts will follow the conference.
The State Water Resources Department has already issued directives instructing local bodies across the region to reduce municipal water supply by 10 percent in response to the deficit. While Nagpur has not yet executed this directive, several adjoining rural areas have reportedly been subjected to supply cuts of up to 30 percent. In response, the NMC has drafted administrative proposals to curtail non-essential consumption, including monetary penalties for domestic wastage, though citywide enforcement poses an operational challenge.
Mayor Thakre attributed the reservoir deficit to inadequate rainfall during the monsoon season, which severely hindered the natural replenishment of regional catchments. She stressed that the available stock has fallen significantly, making strict municipal conservation measures essential to preserve existing reserves and prevent severe shortages later in the year.
The specific terms of the proposed water reduction—including the precise percentage cut and its effective implementation date will be finalized following the review meeting with Guardian Minister Bawankule on Saturday.
