Nagpur Municipal Corporation to Debut High-Tech ‘Water ATMs’ in Pilot Project

In a significant step toward improving public health infrastructure, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is launching a pilot project to provide affordable and purified drinking water through high-tech ‘Water ATMs.’ The initiative is set to roll out at two of the city’s highest-traffic locations: Mor Bhavan Bus Stand and Panchasheel Square.
Strategic Placement for Maximum Impact
Conceptualized by Municipal Commissioner Dr. Vipin Itankar, the project focuses on areas where the need for clean water is most acute. These include Mor Bhavan: A central transit hub for thousands of daily bus commuters. And the next is Panchasheel Square: A critical medical zone with a high density of private hospitals and visitors.
Advanced Features and Specifications
According to the Expression of Interest (EOI) issued by the District Planning and Development Committee (DPDC) Cell, these kiosks will be more than simple water stations. Each unit will be housed in a 4.0 m x 5.0 m prefabricated structure and will feature:
-
Purification: A robust RO+UF system capable of purifying 1,000 liters per hour.
-
Storage & Chilling: A 5,000-liter raw water tank and an integrated chilling plant to provide cold water during Nagpur’s intense summers.
-
Automation: An RFID-based dispensing system for seamless, automated access.
-
Smart Monitoring: SIM-based control panels will allow for real-time remote supervision, ensuring the units are functioning optimally at all times.
The NMC’s push for these smart kiosks represents a blend of essential public service and modern technology, aimed at making safe drinking water accessible to every citizen on the move. Contractors have already been invited to bid on the installation and maintenance of these prefabricated units.
