Nagpur’s Gorewada Centre to Offer Specialized Postgraduate Veterinary Degree in Wildlife Healthcare

In a major boost to regional wildlife conservation, the Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University (MAFSU) has launched a pioneering academic program designed to build specialized veterinary expertise in wildlife healthcare. The first-of-its-kind initiative in Maharashtra will directly benefit conservation efforts for Vidarbha’s dense tiger population and other vulnerable wild species.
Beginning with the 2026–27 academic session, MAFSU is introducing a new postgraduate course in Wildlife Health Management under its Master of Veterinary Science (M.V.Sc.) degree. The curriculum is tailor-made to train veterinarians in advanced diagnostics and treatment protocols for wild animals suffering from infectious diseases, poaching or territorial injuries, and human-wildlife conflict accidents.
Gorewada to Anchor Advanced Veterinary Education
The specialized course will be permanently stationed at the Wildlife Research and Training Centre (WRTC) in Gorewada, Nagpur. For its inaugural batch, the program will open its doors to an initial intake of four students.
Admissions for the debut batch have already been successfully processed through the nationwide entrance examination conducted by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi.
Putting Nagpur on the National Conservation Map
The launch marks a significant milestone for Maharashtra’s educational landscape. Previously, Indian veterinarians looking to specialize in this niche domain had to travel to dedicated institutes in Jabalpur or Tamil Nadu. With this launch, Nagpur officially cements its position as a premier national hub for advanced, hands-on wildlife veterinary education and scientific research.
