The anti-encroachment drive aimed at widening Old Bhandara Road gained momentum on Wednesday, with authorities demolishing approximately 20 houses. Following directives from the district administration and Nagpur Municipal Corporation, the encroachment department conducted bulldozer operations for the second consecutive day, stirring tension in the area.Focusing on the Sataranjipura Zone, officials removed unauthorized structures along the stretch from Mayo Hospital Square to Old Motor Stand and Sunil Hotel. The action targeted buildings obstructing the proposed 18-metre and 30-metre-wide roads outlined in the city’s development plan.Deputy Commissioner (Encroachment) Mangesh Khavale, Assistant Commissioner Harish Raut, and Town Planning officials supervised the operation.
Anti-Encroachment Actions in Multiple Zones
- Dharampeth Zone: A day-long drive cleared illegal shops and vehicles blocking footpaths from Sitabuldi Main Road to Variety Square to enhance pedestrian movement.
- Laxminagar Zone: Encroachments were removed on both sides of roads near IT Park, Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology campus, South Ambazari Road, and Khamla Mutton Market.
- Gandhibagh Zone: Unauthorized street vendors were cleared from Mahal Chowk to Badkas Chowk under Superintendent Sanjay Kamble’s supervision to ease traffic flow.
Status Quo Maintained on Some Properties
Some property owners on Old Bhandara Road challenged demolition notices in the High Court. The court ordered a status quo on these petitions, halting demolition at those sites. Meanwhile, demolition proceeded for the remaining 20 structures in compliance with regulations.As the widening project advances, officials have indicated that the anti-encroachment drive will continue in the coming days, signaling further action against illegal constructions across Nagpur.
