Pune Civic Body Sets Up Panel for Expansion of Phule Couple Memorial

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has established a 14-member committee to manage the land acquisition process for the proposed integration and expansion of the Mahatma Phule Wada and Kranti Jyoti Savitribai Phule Memorial located in the Mahatma Phule Peth area.On Friday, PMC Municipal Commissioner Rajendra Bhosale issued an order to formalize this initiative. Alongside the committee, the PMC has also created a special squad tasked with surveying properties covering 5,310 square meters of land situated between and around the Mahatma Phule Wada and the Savitribai Phule Memorial.
These properties are intended for acquisition to facilitate the expansion and integration of these historic sites, according to officials. The survey squad consists of 31 officials, led by Kisan Dagadkhair, the assistant municipal commissioner of the Bhavani Peth ward. The Maharashtra government approved the proposal through an official notification issued on February 7, clearing the path for this significant heritage project.Under the plan, approximately 5,310 sq m of land will be acquired in accordance with the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act, while an additional 298 sq m is designated under Section 205 for road infrastructure development.
This area, adjacent to the memorials, will be exclusively reserved for the expansion and redevelopment of the historical sites connected to social reformers Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule. The distance between the two memorials is roughly 300 meters, with most of the land in this corridor containing existing structures that need to be acquired for road construction. This road is part of the development plan (DP) for Pune city. The committee will be chaired by Avinash Sakpal, deputy commissioner of Zone 2, and will include representatives from various PMC departments, such as land acquisition, building construction, solid waste management, and property management.Tasked with a comprehensive mandate, the committee will conduct ground-level surveys and inspections, engage with affected residents, and offer guidance throughout the acquisition process.
The panel will also gather input from residents regarding their preferred compensation methods—be it through Floor Space Index (FSI), cash settlements, or Transferable Development Rights (TDR).Based on these consultations, the committee will compile a detailed proposal and seek necessary approvals from the municipal commissioner, the standing committee, and the general body before proceeding with implementation.
