A demolition project ended in near disaster on Wednesday morning when a 50-foot-tall concrete water tank suddenly collapsed at the BJ Government Medical College in Pune. The incident occurred around 3:00 AM within the boys’ hostel campus, located directly behind the District Collector’s office. A worker on site was seriously injured after becoming trapped under heavy concrete debris during the unexpected structural failure.
The Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran was carrying out the demolition work when the structure gave way. Government officials later explained that the elevated water tank was in a severely dilapidated and dangerous condition long before the operation started. As workers attempted to take down the unsafe tower, the main framework collapsed without warning, burying one of the laborers under heaps of rubble.
The Pune Fire Brigade was alerted immediately and rushed emergency response units to the scene. Fire personnel acted quickly upon arrival, establishing communication with the trapped worker to monitor his condition and keep him calm. Recognizing the danger of shifting debris, officers organized a careful and coordinated rescue strategy.
Rescue teams deployed a wide range of specialized equipment, including bolt cutters, hydraulic spreaders, pickaxes, shovels, and heavy-duty ropes. Responders worked continuously for nearly an hour, manually clearing concrete chunks and cutting through tangled rebar to reach the victim. Thanks to their careful efforts, the rescue team successfully pulled the injured man from the wreckage without causing further injuries. Emergency responders immediately transported him to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care.
Fire Officer Nilesh Mahajan praised the rapid execution of the rescue mission, noting that quick communication saved the worker’s life. The operation involved a dedicated team of firefighters, including Raju Owhal, Amit Kasbe, Bhausaheb Chormale, Vijay Pinjan, Jayesh Gatade, Alpesh Konde, Navnath Jedge, Maruti Devkule, Vishal Gaikwad, Atish Owhal, Pratap Sangale, Suresh Pawar, Pratik Kumbhar, Viju Waghmare, and Mayur Chavan. Authorities are expected to review safety measures to prevent similar accidents during high-risk demolition projects in the city.
