Acting on behavioral profiling and detailed baggage scrutiny, officers from the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Pune Customs, along with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), intercepted an Indian female passenger arriving from Bangkok on Air India Express flight IX-241 at Pune International Airport on the evening of October 1, 2026. Following statutory protocols under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, authorities subjected her check-in luggage to a thorough search, uncovering an innovative method of disguising illicit narcotics as everyday personal care products.
The examination revealed a waxy, semi-solid substance emitting a pungent odor hidden inside three commercial cosmetic containers. Two of the tubs were labeled as “Rice & Yolk Hair Treatment,” while the third was marked as “Body Scrub.” The misleading packaging appeared specifically designed to pass off the contraband as standard personal grooming items and bypass routine baggage screening procedures.
A preliminary check using a Narcotic Drug Field Testing Kit yielded a positive result for cannabis. Weighing approximately 1.243 kilograms, the seized substance purported to be high-grade cannabis extract (hashish)—holds an estimated market value of around ₹1 crore. The entire consignment was confiscated under the provisions of the NDPS Act, 1985. The passenger has been formally arrested, and law enforcement agencies are conducting further investigations to trace the origin, final destination, and broader network linked to the smuggling operation.
This successful interception highlights the vital role of intelligence-led passenger assessments, behavioral analysis, and rigorous baggage screening in identifying novel narcotics concealment techniques at international airports.
