The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a critical “Extreme Heat Warning” for the Vidarbha region, effective through April 27, 2026. As the month draws to a close, an intensifying heatwave is expected to push temperatures to 44°C and above, creating dangerously hot and uncomfortable conditions with no immediate signs of respite.
The IMD reports that temperatures across several states are projected to soar 4°C to 5°C above the seasonal average. This rapid heating is being driven by a combination of dry, clear skies and persistent westerly winds sweeping across the country.
Key Regions Affected
While Vidarbha remains a primary concern, the heatwave is set to grip multiple parts of India:
- West India: Maharashtra (specifically the Vidarbha region).
- North India: Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
- Central & East India: Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha.
Warm Nights and Limited Recovery
In a concerning development, the IMD noted that night-time temperatures will also remain high. These “warm nights” will prevent the environment from cooling down, making it difficult for the body to recover from the day’s extreme heat and increasing the risk of heat-related exhaustion for residents.
Safety and Outlook
With the mercury consistently hitting the 44°C mark, authorities are urging citizens to take necessary precautions. The lack of cloud cover and the influence of dry winds suggest that these harsh summer conditions will remain stable through at least the early part of next week.
