To control environmental pollution and protect public health during the Diwali festivities, the Nagpur Police have imposed a strict ban on bursting firecrackers within designated silence zones, including schools, colleges, hospitals, and court premises across the city.
Nagpur Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangre Patil officially issued the prohibitory orders, which remain in force from November 6 to November 14. To ensure strict enforcement, authorities have established a 24-hour dedicated control room at the Police Commissionerate. Citizens can directly report any violations of the directive by calling the official helpline number: 9823300100.
In addition to silence zones, police have completely banned the lighting of firecrackers within a 200-foot radius of high-risk commercial areas and flammable storage facilities. This includes petrol pumps, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder godowns, kerosene depots, licensed firecracker outlets, and chemical warehouses storing hazardous materials.
The administrative action follows directive guidelines issued by the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court aimed at curbing severe noise pollution, toxic air emissions, and the physical distress frequently experienced by senior citizens and infants during the festival season.
Medical experts and law enforcement authorities emphasized the severe health hazards associated with festive pyrotechnics. Firecracker smoke releases toxic fine particulate matter that can trigger acute respiratory ailments, severe coughing fits, bronchitis, and sharp eye irritation. Furthermore, sudden high-decibel acoustic blasts pose a direct risk of temporary or permanent hearing impairment to nearby residents.
City police have urged citizens to celebrate an eco-friendly Diwali, warning that strict legal action will be initiated against individuals or commercial entities violating the safety norms.
