Nagpur is growing, and becoming smart for the citizens. Thanks to the massive projects like these. To be presice, in a significant step towards safer and smarter urban transportation, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), in partnership with Keltron, has initiated a pilot deployment of AI-powered speed sensing cameras along the busy stretch from Omkar Nagar Square to Manewada Square.
This effort is part of the ambitious ₹7,197 crore Integrated Intelligent Traffic Management System (IITMS) project aimed at revolutionizing the city’s traffic management. As part of Phase 1, smart traffic systems have already been installed at 10 critical junctions throughout Nagpur. The newly activated Ring Road segment linking Omkar Nagar and Manewada Square—an area notorious for heavy traffic and frequent speeding—is the first to receive a full-scale rollout of advanced speed radar technology. The cutting-edge equipment installed includes:
- Radar-based speed sensors
- Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras
- High-intensity strobe lights to ensure clear visibility during nighttime
These technologies work seamlessly together to detect speeding vehicles in real time, capture sharp license plate images even under low-light conditions, and instantly relay violation data to the central traffic command center.
Officials are optimistic that this AI-powered enforcement will drastically reduce traffic violations, promote better road discipline, and significantly enhance commuter safety across the city.Encouraged by the positive initial results, NMC has announced plans to expand the system to 32 additional accident-prone and high-speed corridors throughout Nagpur in the near future, marking a major leap forward in intelligent urban traffic management.
