Nagpur is embracing a green revolution! The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has introduced “Tree Banks” across all city zones, distributing 20,000 saplings free of cost to residents as part of a comprehensive green initiative. The program was inaugurated at Shivajinagar Garden in the Dharampeth Zone by Municipal Commissioner Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari. This effort supports the Central Government’s “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0” and Maharashtra’s “Harit Maharashtra, Samruddha Maharashtra” missions, with a state-wide goal of planting one crore trees — and NMC is committed to contributing significantly.
Dr. Chaudhari emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “If citizens nurture these saplings, this mission will truly succeed.” He planted a tree alongside Additional Commissioner Vaishnavi B., leaving a symbolic thumbprint on a commemorative board to mark the launch. The Tree Banks offer a variety of saplings including Sheesham, Mango, Amla, Bakul, Banyan, Ashoka, Neem, Kadamba, Jamun, Chikoo, Peepal, Arjun, and more.
Residents can collect saplings daily between 7–10 a.m. and 4–7 p.m. at designated gardens in all 10 zones. To ensure proper care and follow-up, NMC will maintain records of each sapling distributed. This drive will continue until September 30, 2025, earning praise from environmentalists who see it as a practical way to engage citizens in climate action. Kaustubh Chatterjee, founder of Green Vigil Foundation, remarked, “It’s not just about planting trees; it’s about planting responsibility.”With the monsoon season providing optimal soil moisture, NMC hopes for high survival rates, aiming to make Nagpur greener and cooler in the years to come.
