Auto-rickshaw commutes across Pune district will become more expensive starting September 1, 2026, as the Regional Transport Authority (RTO) has approved a fare revision. Based on recommendations from the Khatua Committee, the base fare for the first 1.5 kilometers will increase from ₹25 to ₹30, while every subsequent kilometer will cost ₹20, up from the current rate of ₹17. This marks the first auto fare adjustment in the region since August 2022.
The price hike comes in response to persistent demands from local auto-rickshaw unions facing rising operational costs. Drivers highlighted the steady increase in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) prices, which rose from around ₹91 per kilogram in 2022 to nearly ₹96 per kilogram today, significantly squeezing their daily earnings.
To implement the new rate structure, all auto-rickshaws operating within the district must have their digital meters recalibrated. The RTO has granted drivers a six-month window, starting September 1, to complete this technical update. During this transition period, drivers are legally required to display official physical fare conversion charts inside their vehicles, allowing passengers to easily verify their total fare against the uncalibrated meter reading.
While the revised rates will slightly increase daily travel expenses for regular commuters, transport officials maintained that the adjustment balances support for drivers’ livelihoods with a modest impact on the public’s pocket.
