Nagpur Police Direct Security Overhaul in Schools Following Foreign Email Threats

In response to foreign-origin bomb threat emails sent to 16 educational institutions, the Nagpur Police Commissionerate has issued a comprehensive security overhaul directive to schools and junior colleges across the city. Speaking at the Our School, Our Security conference, Commissioner of Police Vishwas Nangre Patil emphasized that school administrations must strictly implement Supreme Court guidelines regarding background verification for all employees, transport operators, and third-party vendors.
The mandatory verification policy extends across all campus staff, explicitly prohibiting individuals with a history of sexual offenses from working in any educational capacity—including as bus drivers, conductors, van operators, security guards, or support staff. In addition to staff background checks, school administrations are required to conduct regular physical and cyber security audits, repair boundary fencing, and maintain functional CCTV networks with reliable data backups.
Key Safety Directives and Monitoring Measures
- Surveillance Around Campuses: Plain-clothes police officers equipped with body-worn cameras will patrol areas near schools to deter drug peddling, harassment, and unauthorized solicitation within 100 meters of educational facilities.
- Direct Police-School Communication: Multi-tiered WhatsApp networks will be established across police station, divisional, and zonal levels to facilitate real-time updates between school authorities and local law enforcement.
- Women’s Safety Infrastructure: Police announced the launch of 21 ‘Pink Booths’ to serve as help desks and complaint centers for women on city streets, managed directly by the traffic department.
- Nirbhaya Pathak Teams: Twelve all-women ‘Nirbhaya Pathak’ teams, operating in both uniform and plain clothes, will deploy in dedicated patrol vehicles to monitor schools, colleges, bus terminals, and women’s hostels.
The directive follows heightened vigilance after National Crime Records Bureau data highlighted concerns regarding youth safety, alongside reports of suspicious activity around public transit nodes and school perimeters. School leadership has been instructed to maintain active communication with parents and students, ensuring mental health support and early reporting channels remain accessible.
